In today’s rapidly evolving digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. From connecting with loved ones to pursuing educational and professional opportunities, the online world offers countless benefits. However, along with these advantages come numerous risks and challenges, especially for women. Cyberstalking, harassment, and identity theft are just a few of the threats that women may encounter online. To address these pressing concerns and empower women to navigate the digital landscape safely, a seminar on Women’s Internet Safety and Empowerment took place at the National Incubation Center Peshawar.
This enlightening event was made possible through the funding and support of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, with the Meridian International Center as the implementing partner. The seminar was executed locally by the National Incubation Center Peshawar, in collaboration with the Digital Rights Foundation, InnovateX, and Blimp. The collective efforts of these organizations underscore the importance of addressing women’s online safety and empowerment.
Before delving into the details of the seminar, it is crucial to recognize the gravity of the issue. According to data from the Digital Rights Foundation, a staggering 72% of women using the internet in Pakistan are unaware of cyber harassment laws, and 47% of them choose not to report cases of abuse because they believe it is unnecessary. These statistics highlight the urgent need for education and awareness regarding online safety among women.
The seminar featured a series of informative sessions and discussions aimed at equipping women with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves online. Anam Baloch, Communications Manager, and Danish Umar, Online Safety Trainer, both from the Digital Rights Foundation, conducted a session on navigating online spaces safely in the face of harassment. This session provided valuable insights into recognizing and responding to online threats.
Muhammad Uzair led a training session on protecting against identity theft and online scams. In an era where personal information is increasingly vulnerable to cybercriminals, understanding the tactics used by identity thieves is essential for safeguarding one’s digital presence.
One of the highlights of the seminar was a panel discussion on “Women’s Online Safety Amid the Challenges of Fake News and AI.” The panelists included Samar Hassan, Founder of Ephiphany; Somiya, MD of Her E-Meet Up; Dr. Ali Mehmud, MD of KP IT Board; and Project Director NIC Peshawar, Asim Ishaq Khan. This distinguished panel engaged in a thoughtful discussion on the unique challenges women face in the online world, including the spread of fake news and the implications of artificial intelligence. Their insights shed light on the importance of critical thinking and media literacy in today’s digital age.
At the conclusion of the seminar, certificates were distributed to the participants, recognizing their commitment to learning and promoting online safety. These certificates symbolize the first step towards creating a safer and more inclusive digital space for women in Pakistan.
In a world where the internet is an integral part of our lives, ensuring women’s online safety and empowerment is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental right. The seminar at the National Incubation Center Peshawar, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, serves as a beacon of hope, guiding women towards a safer and more secure online experience. Through education, awareness, and collaboration, we can empower women to take control of their digital lives and thrive in the digital age.
